The Irish Film Classification Office (IFCO) (Oifig Aicmithe Scannán na hÉireann, OASÉ) is the organisation responsible for film and some video game classification and censorship within Ireland. Where restrictions are placed by the IFCO, they are legally binding. Prior to 21 July 2008, the office was branded as the Irish Film Censor's Office, and was previously known as simply the Film Censor's Office, or, in legal references, the office of the Official Censor of Films, which was the official title of the head of the office prior to that date. The head of the office is the Director of Film Classification.

Cinema certificatesEdit

  • G (General Certificate): Suitable for childen of school going age.
  • PG Certificate: Generally, a film classified as "PG" will be suitable for children aged eight and over. However, as some elements within the film might be unsettling for some viewers, it is strongly recommended that parents/guardians - who know their own children best - consult the consumer advice available on this website before deciding on what is appropriate.
  • 12A Certificate: Films classified 12A have been deemed appropriate for viewers of twelve and over. However, they can also be seen by younger children - provided they are accompanied by an adult who has deemed the film appropriate viewing for that child. In such cases, IFCO strongly recommends that parents/guardians make informed decisions by accessing the consumer advice available on this website. Formerly known as 12PG.
  • 15A Certificate: Films classified 15A have been deemed appropriate for viewers of fifteen and over. However, they can also be seen by younger children - provided they are accompanied by an adult who has deemed the film appropriate viewing for that child. Formerly known as 15PG.
  • 16 Certificate: Films classified in this category are suitable for persons of sixteen or over. Those under sixteen will not be admitted to cinemas and it is the responsibility of each cinema, under law, to ensure that this is the case. Introduced in 2004 because of Bad Santa (15PG) which is a film not for young persons. (ID checks required prior to admission)
  • 18 Certificate: Films classified in this category are suitable for persons of eighteen or over. Only adults may be admitted to cinemas. (ID checks required prior to admission)

One of IFCO’s guiding principles is that adults (i.e., persons over 18) should be free, within the law, to choose what they wish to view.
